STREET ANGEL COORDINATOR

TEMPORARY, PART TIME

POSITION SUMMARY

 

This position is responsible for leading and guiding a team of Street Angels who provide services to the Aboriginal/Non-aboriginal street population in Cranbrook with some outreach to Creston, BC. The Coordinator will refer street involved individuals to health and wellness supports and enhance access to community based services. Help facilitate opportunities for individuals to move towards securing healthy lifestyles as well as provide cultural awareness and pathways to engagement for health providers and professionals.

 

The Street Angel is able to take a leadership role in the organization of events and programs of the Project.  This is accomplished by working with all of the internal and external entities to form the partnerships that are critical to completing all activities effectively and efficiently.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • As the liaison between many groups, this requires tact and diplomacy due to conflicting priorities, political nature and level of decision making. 
  • Anticipate reactions and outcomes and prepare for these in advance to ensure a smooth flowing cycle. 
  • Prioritize issues and work on many projects at the same time to ensure that the tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.
  • Available for inquiries regarding the Street Angel Program as well as be prepared for problem solving issues that clients and service providers might have or be going through.
  • Ability to manage critical incidents.
  • Planning and implementing programs (ie Information Sessions/Clinics, Physical Activities, Cultural Awareness Presentations).
  • Implement day to day operations of the program and ensure that the program guidelines and policies are adhered to.
  • Connect individuals to appropriate health and wellness services including accompanying individuals to appointments.
  • Provide follow-up support to individuals and maintain ongoing relationships to ensure stable lifestyle. 
  • Coordinate life skills training for individuals to maintain tenancy and employment.
  • Coordinate service provider awareness and education on Aboriginal culture and Street culture, including current trends, to service providers.  Mediate resolutions and facilitate pathways to engagement between street involved people and health and wellness service providers and professionals where appropriate
  • Provide advocacy or link with the Ktunaxa Street Angel Project to advocates of specific disciplines as appropriate.
  • Record and analyze migrant, street and health/wellness trends in this population to better research the demographics of this group of people and track and trend future patterns to meet reporting requirements as well as to facilitate responsive and preventative services.
  • Maintain related records and statistics and produce reports as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • University Degree in Human Services OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven skills and experience with at-risk behaviours and individuals;
  • Good interpersonal, oral and written communication skills;
  • Well developed conflict resolution skills;
  • Knowledge of health and wellness resources in the Cranbrook community;
  • Strong understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal culture;
  • Good organization, time and general management skills, and ability to work independently;
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the systemic, cultural and individual barriers and issues facing the homeless population;
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours – evening and weekend work will be required;
  • Must hold or be willing to obtain a valid First Aid Certificate;
  • Must have valid driver’s license;
  • Knowledge of Ktunaxa and Aboriginal culture, traditions and heritage; awareness and sensitivity;
  • Ability to lead/manage multiple priorities / projects of a significant scope in a fast-paced environment;
  • Knowledge of and experience with working within protocols and procedures;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with accuracy and consistency;
  • Strong organizational skills, critical thinking skills and keen attention to detail;
  • Capacity to prioritize and manage a number of competing initiatives and timelines; meet deadlines;
  • Provide day to day advice, support and direction to services team;
  • Ability to work out collaborative solutions;
  • Respect for and knowledge of aboriginal rights, culture, history and goals;
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of confidentiality;
  • High level of emotional resiliency and sensitivity;
  • Awareness of drug and alcohol addictions;
  • Awareness of Mental Health issues;
  • This position reports to the KNC Director of Health.
