SOCIAL WORKER

POSITION SUMMARY
Part of a team of professionals dedicated to the well-being of young people and their families; being innovative, flexible, organized and responsive to the needs of all our clients of all Aboriginal descents (First Nations, Metis and Inuit). Working closely with the band leadership and communities, other KKCFS staff at all worksites, and community partners.
Ktunaxa Kinbasket Child and Family Service Society is an integrated multi-disciplinary team of staff that work in the following areas:
Early childhood prevention and intervention
Child care support
Family support
Family circles and family conferencing
Reconnection and family reconstruction
Voluntary social worker services
Guardianship to children in care
Kinship (Foster) care services
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Coordinate family meetings upon request by families, community members, KKCFSS staff, MCFD staff
Coordinate meetings between MCFD, KKCFSS and family / community upon request
Liaise between MCFD and Community Council, or Kootenay Region Metis Association regarding on and off reserve child protection investigations involving member of these respective Nations
Be involved in on-reserve and off reserve child protection investigations if requested by Community Council Members or Metis Association members
Ensure that the roles and responsibilities of the KKCFSS agency is shared with community, both aboriginal community and non-aboriginal community providing services to aboriginal children and families
Provide family and community support services
Attend KKCFS staff meetings
Attend KKCFSS training upon request
As a fully delegated Community Social Work position, delegated under the Province of BC Child Welfare legislation; responsibilities will include the above and services delegated under the Child, Family and Community Service Act:
Intake, assessment and referral
Family support
Guardianship to children in care
Alternate care services
Child protection responses
Recruitment, approval and support of/to kinship (foster) care
families
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Undergraduate degree in Social Work or related field
- Recent graduates with BSW welcomed
- Experience working with families at risk (equivalency and other positions that work with child protection)
- Sound knowledge of aboriginal issues both historical and current in British Columbia
- Be a positive community role model
- Work in ways which empower and build capacity among individuals and communities
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with other CFS staff as well as other inter-disciplinary partners in both the aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities
- Commitment to the capacity of individuals and communities to promote their own health and well-being
- Excellent communication skills, including written, oral and computer skills
- Committed to life-long learning
- Maintain confidentiality
- Be self-directed, flexible and able to work independently
- A valid drivers’ license and reliable vehicle available at work
